NHHS Choral Arts Concert Dedication - May 10

North Harford High School
Choral Arts Concert
"Out of the Deep - A Prayer for the Children"
May 10, 2005 - 7:00 PM
Kennard-Dale HS (NHHS auditorium is being renovated.)
The Rutter "Requiem" performed at this concert is being dedicated to the memory of Judith L. Famous, who died of cancer in late March. Mrs. Famous, who was Music Director at Emory Church, was an accomplished oboe player who gave private lessons, and taught for 30 years in Harford County schools. Most recently, she taught at Prospect Mill, Forest Lake and Bel Air elementary schools. Mrs. Famous played the oboe in the Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra, for her church, and in several small groups she formed. In past years, she had been a featured instrumentalist in North Harford High School choral programs. The "Requiem" oboe line will be played by one of Mrs. Famous' former students.

The Final Great Oboe Swap

Judi had just bought a new oboe before she died. Well, at least she was close. Over the course of her teaching, she had several "great oboe swaps". The great oboe swap is like trickle down economics. When Judith Famous decided to buy a new oboe - something a worth a couple more hundred dollars than what she had. Something better. Most of them were Covey oboes. When she decided to get a new instrument, she always found someone to buy hers. That student sold their oboe to a younger student and so on, down to the plastic starter oboe. One time I heard of seven oboes switching hands in one swap. It was quite the undertaking, and Judi always organized the whole thing. When she died, there was a new (to her) oboe in the living room. I imagine she had played it a little, but she had not paid for it. Her oboe was sold to another.

Yesterday Tod talked with the person who sold mom her oboe and we basically ended up canceling the sale and sending the oboe back to the seller. She had another buyer.

It's sad to say there is no oboe in the famous family at this time - but hopefully one of the grandchildren may pick it up some day. If so, maybe the grandchild will be at the bottom of another oboe swap.

If you were ever part of an oboe swap, please add a comment. I'm interested to see how many oboes were exchanged over her lifetime. Thanks!

The One Armed Photographer

Happy birthday Dad.

How is it that Mom was always smiling on queue but the one armed man looks like he was caught off guard?

P.S. if you don't see any pictures, that means it's raining in Stamford CT. Wait a few hours and try again later...

Happy Birthday Earl

Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday Gampa Earl, Happy Birthday to you.

Thank You

It's time for the next posting on the Famous Family Group Blog. We've used this blog over the past month to talk about Judi's sickness and her death and funeral arrangements.

Earl said a few words at the commitment service on Saturday morning. He spoke about how his mother died 55 years ago. When she died, his father, Frank, said all we can do is just keep on living.

He also said that he often heard complaints from Judi about being negative, but she just set the bar so high.

After the comments, letters, cards, postings and talks, all I can say is that she did set the bar too high. I've been anxious all week about trying to even attempt to reach up to the bar she set for us.

All we can do is try.

I can't write real good, so all I can really do is to thank everyone who was with us during her illness, her death and the memorial service. I continue to read the posts and cards and will probably re-read them for years to come.
